Last week, my case went viral. But it’s not just me. The floodgates have opened. Hundreds of Australians have now shared their own Vodafone/TPG horror stories – billing errors, false debts, harassment from debt collectors, and obstructive complaint handling.
Across TikTok and Reddit, the response has been staggering:
- 95,114+ TikTok views (1,832 likes, 147 comments, 264 shares, 408 saves, 414+ hours of total play time)
- 176,000+ Reddit views in under 24 hours (961 upvotes, #1 post in r/australian on Friday & Saturday)
Here’s what people had to say:
The Worst Stories (TikTok + Reddit)
“I was separated and grieving, then Vodafone listed a false debt with collectors. I had to clear it myself just to get a house loan. Ombudsman is now chasing them for breach of privacy. I’ve been traumatised by this experience.” – Reddit
“I lost reception for nearly 6 months. They refused to release me, sent me to debt collectors, harassed me, and I had to go to my MP and the TIO to get out. Only after 9 months did they release me and wipe my debt.” – TikTok
“Vodafone has been deducting $20 every month with no record of it. Bank confirmed it’s them. Vodafone says they ‘can’t help.’ My bank had to cancel all direct debits and dispute it.” – TikTok
“I got a defective phone on a new plan. Cancelled within the cooling-off period and returned it. Vodafone still sent me to debt collectors for thousands. Only backed down after hours of fighting.” – TikTok
“Charged me $1,200 extra for insurance. Promised a call back, no call, no email, nothing. Still unresolved.” – TikTok
“Vodafone sent me a credit default notice while my account was in dispute with the TIO. That’s a material privacy breach.” – Reddit
Everyday Experiences That Shouldn’t Happen
“They charged me twice for the same plan. Refused a refund, said it would ‘just be credited.’” – Reddit
“Every 12 months they bump up the price by $5 and throw you extra data nobody asked for. Only when I threatened to cancel did they restore my original plan price.” – TikTok
“They wouldn’t process a promised waiver even after the TIO told them to. I had to go back again.” – Whirlpool
“They charged me after I’d already switched to Kogan a year earlier.” – Reddit
“They tried to charge me $70 after I cancelled within the 30-day guarantee. Hell nah.” – TikTok
“They harassed me over an $0.88 credit balance for years.” – Reddit
The Theme: Learned Indifference
“They’re counting on you to give up if it goes on too long.” – Reddit
“They’re broken, corrupt and failing customers every single day.” – Whirlpool
“It’s learned indifference. Staff don’t care, supervisors stonewall, and even the executive office ignores you.” – Whirlpool
“They don’t get punished, the TIO is toothless, so they keep doing it.” – TikTok
Why It Matters
This is no longer about one billing mistake. It’s about:
- Consumer harm: false debts, harassment, stress.
- Privacy breaches: wrongful credit listings, obstructed access requests.
- Governance failure: executives made aware, yet systems remain broken.
When hundreds of Aussies confirm the same failures, it’s not coincidence. It’s systemic.
Vodafone/TPG can deny my story – but they can’t deny hundreds of others.
Final Section: What Happens Next?
The sheer scale of stories coming forward shows this isn’t an isolated case. It’s systemic. Regulators are already engaged (TIO, OAIC, referral to ACCC & ACMA), and mainstream media interest is building.
But ultimately, it’s the voices of everyday Australians that make this undeniable. When hundreds of people report the same failures, the pattern is clear: Vodafone/TPG is broken, and it’s customers paying the price.
💥 But just when I thought this case couldn’t get any worse, I uncovered something even more troubling: Vodafone’s assurances to the Ombudsman don’t match what their own staff told me.
